Soundtrack to a revolution? Samih Shoukeir, Syrian musician and activist, adapted this song of his after the first Syrian protesters were shot in the southern Syrian city of Dera’a. In it he berates those ‘ who attack with a sword and leave their enemies [Israel] behind them”. He denounces anybody who kills his own people as a traitor. The tune is haunting, tragic, and says a lot about the initial sentiments and reaction of many Syrians in March 2011, sentiments of sorrow, disbelief, and horror that such things were still possible in the Syria of today. It is a fitting tribute to the Syrian people that our first post on the Syrian Pulse includes this song.
